Documents from another country
An apostille can only be issued by the country that issued the document, so we cannot obtain a California apostille for a foreign original. If your document came from another country and you need it used in California or a third country, we can provide a certified translation with a notarized translator's statement. That statement can sometimes be apostilled here, but it does not authenticate the foreign original, so confirm with the destination that it will be accepted. Call us and we'll tell you the right steps.

Apostille questions in Sacramento, answered
What if I have multiple FBI documents?
Each additional FBI document is $107 ($87 service + $20 federal fee) when processed together. The $70 round-trip mailing fee is charged only once per combined submission.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate from the California Secretary of State that confirms the signature and seal on your document are genuine, so the document is accepted in another Hague Convention country. It doesn't verify what the document says.
How long does it take?
Same-day service is available for $199 (first document) when you call by 1 PM on a business day, for eligible California documents and subject to state office hours and acceptance. Standard service takes 1–2 business days, and documents we pick up before 12 PM are usually ready the next day. Our FBI apostille estimate is 2–4 weeks, plus shipping; federal processing can take longer. Other federal documents are quoted separately.
How much does an apostille cost?
$150 for the first California document, including the $26 state filing fee ($20 apostille fee plus $6 in-person handling) and pickup and delivery. Same-day is $199. Each additional California document is $106 ($80 + $26 state fee). One FBI apostille is $214 total: $124 service, $20 federal fee and $70 mailing ($35 each way). Other federal documents, notarization and translation are quoted separately.
Do I need to come to your office?
No. We pick up your document anywhere in the Sacramento area and deliver it back. You can also drop it off at our Fair Oaks office between 10 AM and 6 PM.
Can you apostille a photocopy?
No. California only apostilles original certified copies or original notarized documents. For vital records, order a certified copy from the county recorder or CDPH. For some other documents, we can notarize a copy certification where allowed, such as a custodian's affidavit. A California notary does not certify that a passport, diploma or vital record copy is true.
My birth certificate is from another state. Can you apostille it?
An apostille must come from the state that issued the document. Call us and we'll tell you how to get it done.
Can you apostille my FBI background check?
Yes, through the U.S. Department of State, since it's a federal document. One FBI apostille is $214 total: $124 service + $20 federal fee + $70 mailing. Our service estimate is 2–4 weeks, plus shipping; federal processing can take longer. Federal apostilles are never same-day and are not issued by California.
My document is in another language. What do I do?
We provide certified translations with a notarized translator's statement, which can then sometimes be apostilled. The translator signs the statement and a different notary notarizes it. The apostille on a translator's statement does not authenticate a foreign original, so confirm with the destination that it will be accepted.
Does my document need to be notarized first?
Personal documents like a power of attorney, affidavit or consent letter must be notarized before they can be apostilled. Vital records and court documents usually don't. We'll check for you.
Which countries accept an apostille?
Countries that are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, including Mexico, the Philippines, India, Armenia, China, Canada and most of Europe. Confirm with the destination authority that an apostille applies to your document, as objections may apply. Countries like the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait require embassy legalization instead, which we do not offer.
Do you offer embassy legalization?
No. We do not provide embassy or consulate legalization. We can still notarize or translate your document.
Do you give legal or immigration advice?
No. We handle notarization, translation and apostille submission only. For legal or immigration questions, please speak with an attorney.
