Hospital and nursing home notary questions, answered
Can I book for my mom or dad in the hospital?
Yes. Family members book most of our hospital visits. You can book and pay; the patient signs.
How fast can you get to the hospital?
Same day, and usually at the bedside within 1 hour anywhere in the Sacramento area. The signer must be awake, alert and able to understand what they are signing.
My parent's ID is expired or lost. Can you still notarize?
Often, yes. California accepts certain IDs that are current or were issued within the last 5 years, and credible witnesses can sometimes be used when there is no ID, subject to specific requirements. Call us first and we will tell you what will work.
What if my parent is on medication or very tired?
The signer must be alert and understand what they are signing. If we cannot confirm that, we cannot notarize. We are happy to come back at a better time.
Is there anything special about signing in a nursing home?
In California, an advance healthcare directive (including a healthcare power of attorney) signed in a skilled nursing facility usually also needs a patient advocate or ombudsman as a witness. A general financial power of attorney is not subject to that rule across the board. Ask the facility or your attorney, and we will coordinate timing.
Do you need permission from the hospital?
No special permission from us is needed, but access is subject to each facility's visiting rules, and we check in at the nursing station. Give us the facility and room number when you book.
How much does it cost?
The notary fee per signature is set by California law. Travel is one flat fee we quote before we leave.
Can you help prepare the documents?
No. A notary verifies identity and witnesses signatures. We cannot give legal advice or guarantee that a document is legally valid. For help preparing documents, please speak with an attorney.
