What you'll need
Read the packet and check the receiving agency's required form.
Gather the names, dates and supporting records requested in the document.
Review the packet's signing, identification and witness instructions.
How to complete it
Fill in the vehicle (Page 1) Copy the VIN and title number exactly from the title.
Sign the title too The bill of sale does not replace the title. In North Carolina, the seller’s signature on the title must be notarized, so we can notarize the title and this bill of sale at the same appointment.
Sign in front of a notary Do not sign ahead of time. Bring a current, government-issued photo ID for each person signing.
Seller: keep your license plate (in North Carolina, plates stay with the seller) and turn it in to the NCDMV or move it to another vehicle before canceling insurance.
Buyer: title and register the vehicle with the NCDMV within 28 days of the sale to avoid penalties.
Keep a copy of the bill of sale for your records and taxes.
When you cannot pick up your vehicle yourself from a tow yard, impound lot, storage facility, or repair shop, this form authorizes someone else to do it for you.
A general release ends a dispute: one party accepts payment or other value and gives up all claims about a specific matter, such as property damage or a private sale.
