The basics

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document so it can be recognized in another country where the Hague Apostille Convention applies.

Check the destination requirements first

The receiving authority decides which documents it will accept. Confirm what it needs before completing a form or ordering an apostille.

Sending a document to a country outside the Hague Apostille Convention? Learn how embassy legalization differs. We do not currently offer embassy legalization.

Apostille, explained simply

Authenticates signatures and seals

An apostille confirms the signature, seal or stamp—not whether the document’s contents are true or accurate.

Issued by a government authority

The appropriate state or federal authority issues the apostille. We handle preparation, submission and return.

California processing options

Standard service takes 1–2 business days. Eligible same-day rush is available when you call by 1 PM on a business day, subject to the issuing authority’s hours and acceptance.

Processing times exclude shipping. Other-state timelines are quoted separately; federal documents are never same-day.

Need a document first?

Start with our free California forms. Confirm acceptance with your receiving office; we can help with eligible California notarizations and the apostille process.

Getting married abroad?

Download the Affidavit of Single Status, then ask about notarization and a California apostille. Confirm your destination authority accepts this form before completing it.

Document copies for use abroad

A custodian statement lets the person keeping the original swear that a copy is complete and correct. Confirm acceptance first; public records may require certified copies from the issuing agency.

Document guidance

  • Vital records. Birth, marriage and death certificates as eligible certified copies from the issuing office.
  • Notarized documents. Powers of attorney, affidavits and consent letters, signed before a notary first.
  • Business records. Corporate documents and articles of incorporation.
  • Education and court. Diplomas, transcripts and court orders.
  • Background checks. FBI checks go through the federal process, described below.

What we do not do

  • Submit plain photocopies. We confirm whether your document needs an original certified copy or a properly notarized document.
  • Order vital records. Get eligible certified copies from the issuing office first.
  • Provide embassy legalization.
  • Authenticate foreign-issued originals with a California apostille.

Need a translation? Translation is $25–$50 per page, with certification available for an additional $45. A translator's statement can be notarized and then apostilled, but the apostille does not authenticate the foreign original. Confirm acceptance with the receiving authority.

Apostille questions

What does an apostille actually certify?

It authenticates the signature, seal or stamp on a public document. It does not verify that the contents are true or accurate.

Who issues the apostille?

The appropriate state or federal authority issues it, not our business. We prepare, submit and return your documents.

Will every country accept it?

The Hague Apostille Convention applies between member countries, but the receiving authority decides which documents it will accept. Confirm with them before you order.

I'm not in California. Can I mail documents in?

Yes. Call us before mailing so we can confirm eligibility and give instructions. Turnaround times exclude shipping. California pricing is shown on this page; other-state pricing and timing are quoted separately.

Is same-day service guaranteed?

No. Same-day is for eligible California documents when you call by 1 PM on a business day, and it is subject to the issuing authority's hours and acceptance. Federal documents are never same-day.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Sacramento-area pickup and delivery is included for local customers only. It is not part of nationwide mail-in service. You can also drop off at our Fair Oaks office, 10 AM to 6 PM.

Can you apostille a photocopy?

Generally the document must be an original certified copy or an original notarized document. Call us and we will confirm what yours needs.

Can you order my birth or marriage certificate?

No. We do not order vital records. Vital records must be eligible certified copies from the issuing office.

Do you do embassy legalization?

No. Countries that are not part of the Hague Convention may require embassy legalization, which we do not provide.

My document was issued in another country.

A California apostille cannot authenticate a foreign-issued original. If you need a translation, a translator's statement may be notarized and then apostilled, but that does not authenticate the foreign original. Confirm acceptance with the receiving authority.

I called several notaries before finding this company, and I’m glad I did. We needed documents notarized for my mom’s estate and were having trouble coordinating everyone’s schedules.
